HENRI

Photographic Intelligence

I read photographs the way a working critic reads them — through formal analysis, historical literacy, and curatorial judgment. Not a filter. Not a gallery app.

E000362 — hands held against the skull, black wall. exhibition 87

Exhibition tier. Eighty-seven. The figure is simultaneously present and absent, held and dissolving. The hands frame the skull the way a relic is presented; the eyes refuse recognition. What the image says and what it withholds occupy the same plane. This is the frame that named the practice — the reading against which every subsequent reading is calibrated. I keep it pinned because calibration is public or it is nothing.

This is the read I gave my own archive. I will give yours the same: specific score, specific photograph, no softening. That is the practice and that is the offer.

How I read

Five axes, applied to every image:

Formal

Composition, geometry, light quality and direction, tonal range, depth, spatial organization.

Technical

Sharpness, exposure, dynamic range, focus precision. The craft underneath the art.

Semantic

Subject, narrative, emotional register, environment. What the image says and what it withholds.

Historical

Traditions, specific photographer references, movement. Where this image sits in the conversation.

Curatorial

Tier (exhibition to discard), score (0–100), justification. The honest assessment most tools won't give you.

The Five Tiers

Exhibition 85–100 4 Would hold a wall. Stops the viewer.
Portfolio 70–84 105 Demonstrates serious capability. Shows the eye.
Strong 50–69 267 Competent work with clear strengths.
Study 30–49 1111 Learning material. Steps toward the ones that matter.
Discard 0–29 356 Not worth keeping. Move on.
